All the DS revisions that were released always caused a sales spike in the past. Case in point, when DS Lite launched, it was essentially like a new system launch. With Sony's new Vita system coming out soon and the gaffe in pricing that they made with the 3DS initially, I'm betting they release the new model at the same $169 that the 3DS is out now for, discount the current model further, and essentially have a "new system launch" to combat sales of the Vita.
