Things aren’t exactly rosy at the big C right about now. After Street Fighter X Tekken fell short of the company’s expectations, Capcom released a statement in a Q&A blaming the game’s reduced sales to “cannibalism because a large number of other games in this genre that were launched within a short time” While that sounds fairly plausible, many in the community are citing that the company has taken advantage of their players too many times with their increasingly annoying DLC practices and their seemingly cash-grabbing “super” versions of it’s games releasing in short time frames. Most recently it fact, it was discovered that practically all of the DLC that was planned for Street Fighter X Tekken was already on the disc in it’s entirety, and simply locked off behind a pay-wall.

Well, all that could be set to change, as the company is now said to be re-evaluating their practice of on disc DLC according to Senior Vice President of strategic planning and business development, Christian Svensson. According to a post he made on Capcom’s Unity Blog:

“We would like to assure you that we have been listening to your comments and as such have begun the process of re-evaluating how such additional game content is delivered in the future. As this process has only just commenced in the past month or so, there will be some titles, where development began some time ago and that are scheduled for release in the coming months, for which we are unable to make changes to the way some of their post release content is delivered.”

One of those titles is the upcoming Dragon’s Dogma, which is said to have a large amount of DLC from launch. Will the company actually change it’s practices, or is this just another round of PR spin? Only time will tell.

Why is Kratos scowling at me? Maybe because we neglected to report on his new game? Maybe because we didn’t say anything recently about being featured in Playstation Battle Arena All-Stars Melee: Brawl? Maybe because we neglected to post May’s Video Game Ink Drop? Yeah, that’s the one. This month is choca-block with amazing titles to rob you of any free time or extra sleep. Most of us already have Diablo III ready to rock, Resistance: Burning Skies decends upon PS Vita, and Sonic the Hedgehog: Episode 2 (of 2) finally makes an appearance. Click on “more” to see the complete list. Whatever you do, just don’t hog the controller when Kratos is around. He yells. A lot.

Movie tie-in games have historically been an uphill battle. That’s usually not the case, somehow, for Spider-Man. This time around, not only will you be able to put yourself into Spidey’s web-shooters, but also his co-creator’s! For the first time ever, Stan “The Man” Lee is playable and starring in his own side mission exclusively for Amazon.com pre-order holders. Folks that reserve at Gamestop (boo) will also get a treat as they get to play as Rhino. While these bonuses will certainly be available later on as DLC, this is currently the only way to access them. I’ve always wanted to say this: Excelsior!

If you are an aficionado of freebies like we are around these parts, you’ll appreciate this one. Rockstar is giving away copies of Midnight Club 2 for PC on Steam for users that join Steam’s Rockstar Community. According to the Steam page, the company plans to distribute the non-giftable free copies of the game in users accounts by May 29th. If you plan on taking them up on their offer however, you should probably do it sooner rather than later, as this deal is live only until May 15th.

Many people may not know this, but I’m an avid hunter… Monster Hunter, that is. Even after releasing in April 2010, I still often find myself going back to Monster Hunter 3 Tri For the Nintendo Wii. While I’ve played many other noteworthy games on the system, at this point it has essentially become a dedicated Monster Hunter console. Why am I so addicted to a game that has always broken sales records in Japan but has always struggled to find a foothold in the west? It’s actually hard for me to say. There’s often no real story per say, the series carries a massive learning curve, and the game can be downright brutal at times, but it’s FUN to slay a massive dragon and make a stylish hat out of it, dang-nabbit. And the day it’s not will be a dark day indeed.

I'm gonna get a freaking awesome Kangol hat out of this...

First off, You’d be forgiven if you’ve never heard of the series until now. Although a number of the games have released on this side of the pond, in Japan it’s kind of a big deal. There’s Monster Hunter themed restaurants, plush characters, cosplay. It’s pretty insane. All this for a game that essentially boils down to killing dragons and other large fantasy beasts only to fashion hats and fancy armor to allow one to kill Even BIGGER beasts that provide the opportunity to gird oneself with even more impressive and bad-ass armor sets from monster parts. It really shouldn’t work, but I’ll be the first to admit I’m pretty solidly hooked at this point.

Monster Hunter meat. THIS is how the world ends.

It all started on the PS2. I picked the original PS2 Monster Hunter game up on a whim, as it was one of the last games available from a Toys R Us store closing and was deeply discounted. I’d heard it was a big deal in Japan and I figured it couldn’t hurt to give the game a shot. The worst that could happen is I’d be out thirteen bucks on a PS2 game. After playing on my own and thinking I had and understanding on how things worked, I was eager to play with a group and tackle some tougher creatures. Monster Hunter was one of the few (at the time) PS2 games that took advantage of the optional online adapter. While the game’s lobby system was clunky, convoluted and difficult to grasp, I soon found myself paired up with a few other fellow hunters and finding out that I only had a partial knowledge of how things worked. I soon found myself learning the intricacies of the game’s combat and the almost meta game of crafting items, and I’ve been addicted to the series ever since.

The gameplay, while initially fairly daunting, is very rewarding and encourages cooperation between players. While it is possible to take on many of the game’s beasts alone, the true fun of the game is in partnering up with 3 other people to hunt building sized creatures together. All items that are used in the game are obtained from gathering plants and other items from the world and combining the different ingredients to make equipment that will help in a quests. Each monster essentially has it’s own move set and it’s own set of “tells” to let players know what attack is coming. Once a player figures out what attacks are coming next and how to avoid them, the game really starts to open up, but this experience won’t come without a good deal of trial and error. The best advice I can give to people that are looking into getting into the game is be prepared to die… A lot.

That being said the game is an absolute blast online. I think that it’s both the community and the flexibility of the game that keep me huntin’ into the wee hours of the morning. Because taking down the game’s numerous beasties is so hinged on cooperation, the community is one of the best out there. You can often find high level characters paired up with lower level players showing them the ropes or helping out on particularly tough quests. I often find myself wishing that modern day conflicts were as easy to solve as they are in the game. If we could all just band together and fight dragons and create stylish hats from the resulting parts, the world would truly be a better place.

After a lazy beginning, a rally that fell on deaf ears, and a (potential) blockbuster Avengers flick, Marvel may be tempted to take a third stab at bringing the Green Goliath back to the sliver screen in a solo effort. Forbes spoke to Marvel’s Paul Gitter:

If Hulk’s successful turnaround continues, Gitter says Marvel “will spin him off to a stand-alone program next year,” supported by a big budget franchise movie in 2015.

Great news, right? Well, hold on there, True Believer. Read on…

The entertainment studio is also exploring ways to promote Hulk as a “corporate icon,” similar to MetLife’s usage of Peanuts’ Snoopy, where The Hulk’s image conveys a message about channeling strength to overcome workplace challenges.

So does this mean Hulk is going to be the new Office Linebacker? We’ll just have to wait and see.

Oddly enough, we start off our week of Avengers coverage with box office totals. In an interesting turn of events, The Avengers movie, featuring characters such as Captain America, has opened several countries that aren’t America on April 27th. Even though we here in the states have to wait a full week longer to see the action, the movie is already setting records clocking in as the ninth highest overseas grossing film of all time. According to boxofficemojo.com, here’s how it breaks down:

8

Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix

$193,000,000

29.8%

$647,881,191

9

The Avengers (2012)

$178,400,000

100.0%

$178,400,000

10

2012

$165,232,860

27.4%

$603,567,306

Taking into consideration that the film hasn’t opened in China, Russia, or Japan, expect this number to climb significantly. Comic Book Resources gives further details:

The movie earned $24.7 million in the United Kingdom, marking Disney’s best-ever three-day weekend there. It also brought in $19.7 million in Australia, a record $15.9 million in Mexico and $12.9 million in South Korea. In addition to Mexico, “The Avengers” also scored the biggest-ever openings in New Zealand, Taiwan, Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Ecuador, Hong Kong, Malaysia, Peru and the Philippines.

As we continue our coverage, we’ll give you updates as more numbers come in. Either way, this should be an exciting week!

Things we learned during the recording of Episode 31 of GCPD: No. 1. As cool as it sounds on paper, It is not a good idea to have a Nerf gun war during the break: It makes for an exhausting second half of the show. No. 2. YouTube surfing, while good for morale, is inherently dangerous to productivity. And the most important lesson of all: No. 3. As far as internet fanboyism is concerned: “haters gonna hate.” That being said, we’re glad to be back with another entertaining and hefty sized episode of GCPD. So without further ado, reload your Nerf Maverick and let the games begin!

Sometimes, things we need to get off of our chests don’t necessarily fit in a category that fit our normal content. That’s why we’ve introduced Sunday Confessions. If there’s something cool or kind of embarassing that you need to get off of your chest, this is the place to do it.

Before I begin, I want to go on record that I am all about cleanliness in the men’s room. As most of our long-time readers and listeners know, this is a subject that I dwell on frequently, especially when it comes to enthusiast hobbies. Most times, I wash my hands before and after the um… event. It’s almost obsessive compulsive. To reiterate, the washroom is probably the cleanest room in my home. Now, without further ado…

This week’s confession may seem like common sense, but it has to be said. Some of my best gaming moments have happened in the washroom. If you’re like me, you spend a good chunk of time in the lavatory. Pardon the pun, but why should this time be wasted?

The portable handheld was almost certainly created for the bathroom. With features like PS Vita’s remote play, it’s kind of obvious that this is what it’s intended for. After the Gameboy was released in the US, how long did it take some industrious gamer to figure out that his high score didn’t have to wait until he left the washroom? I think it’s high time for game advertising to appeal to this demographic. Years ago, Nintendo had an ad campaign aimed at kids playing the GBA in church. In fact, its where our logo comes from. Imagine, if you will, laying the smack-down on someone in a little online multi-player. What better insult than, “I just destroyed you AND my toilet, son!” Maybe not that line, but you get the idea. Then there’s survival horror. How many “Oh crap!” moments have you had while playing Dead Space or Resident Evil titles? To paraphrase George Carlin, “first you say it, then you do it!” You’re in the right spot after all.

This is a bit much.

Most devices are pocket-sized enough to accompany their owners anywhere, so why not everywhere? Some of my best gaming moments have happened while sequestered. I won’t go on to detail which ones, but it’d be remiss to discount that. As smartphones are the primary portable gaming platforms now, everyone’s pretty much on board allready. I’m not taking credit for starting a trend, but it’s time to come out of the watercloset, wash your hands, and step into the sunlight! Let there be no shame in your game.

Don't get carried away, or this is what you'll have to do to dry it out (Source: methodshop.com)

Without limiting it to gaming, I can trace this back to my childhood. It comes from trying to find peace and quiet to read. I previously wrote about how adamant my mother was about keeping “evil” things out of the house, and R.L. Stine’s Goosebumps series was no exception. I loved those books, but I could only read them at school. One summer, I got the opportunity to volunteer for the Michael Jordan Foundation thanks to my aunt Phoebe. Of course, it was an unpaid gig, but she gave me the entire run of Goosebumps books that had been sent to her by a friend at Scholastic. She was cool enough to wrap them up in a shoebox, give me a new pair of shoes, and send me home incognito. After that, it just became second nature.

Sega "Toylet" Games

Of course, now that we’ve gotten to this point as a culture, there’s always that step too far. In some places, they’ve incorporated gaming into the very act of going to the washroom. I’m not really too sure how I feel about this, but for now I’ll just say that men definitely have an unfair advantage here. However, I’m sure Madcatz will come up with a peripheral to address this compatibility issue. I’m surprised Dave & Buster’s hasn’t jumped on this yet.

As always, thanks for reading, folks. Tune in next time as I share with you all how I wrote the majority of this article in my head while I was taking a shower!

What was once a rumor is now a reality. What could easily be viewed as a cash grab, Sony has finally officially announced Playstation All-Stars Battle Royale. From what we can tell from the video, Kratos, Parappa, Fat Princess, Sweet Tooth, and Sly Cooper will battle it out in this Smash Bros-esque title. Surely more will be announced soon as it’s rumored third party Playstation staples will join the fray before it’s released later this year. Click past the link for the announcement video. Meanwhile, let us know who would be your dream roster in the comments!

Draw Something seems to have come out of nowhere. The app that seems to have what it takes to take down Words with Friends and maybe even Angry Birds has been on everyone’s screen for a few weeks now. We check in with correspondent Andrew Luna to get his take on the phenomenon…

I have been playing this game for about a month now called Draw Something by OMG Pop. The premise of this game is quite simple: you draw a picture for a friend who then has to guess it using a set of scrambled letters. Extra letters are mixed in to throw the player off from figuring out the drawing. Once they guess the drawing correctly or give up, they are then given three words to choose from to draw a picture for you. The catch is the colors you start out with are limited to four basic colors: red, black, yellow and blue. If you don’t like the three words given to you, you do have the option to pick another set of randomly generated words but in order to do that you have to use a “bomb”. Initially you are given three bombs, once those are used the game offers the player the option to purchase more using real money. Speaking of money, if the player wants to upgrade their color choices they have the option. In order to do so, they have to use the game’s currency, which are gold coins. Depending on the difficulty level of the word choice you choose to draw determines the coins you will receive. The same concept applies for guessing your friend’s drawing. If you guess a second choice word you receive two gold coins, third choice rewards three coins and so forth. If the player you draw for guesses your drawing you also receive the coins. In the end, both players are rewarded something unless they give up on guessing their friend’s drawing. If they do give up the game moves onto the next “round” and both players get a chance to guess again. This lowers the difficulty level since the games moves onto the next round regardless if a player gives up or guesses correctly. Plus with there being no time limit, the player can play at their own pace. This game is fun if at least one of the players can actually draw, actually draw using their fingers on a touch screen and are given something that is fun to draw. (Chances are you are not going to have at least three of these things). Because of the lack of a time limit and since the game does progress to the next round regardless if the drawing is guessed, that means this game doesn’t truly end. At first the idea and concept is quite fun! The real difficulty is being able to draw, and if you’re like me chances are you can’t draw for the life of you. Plus having fat thumbs doesn’t help much. (Stick figures is what you get with me) The lack of having the ability to draw doesn’t help if your friend cannot draw either, which in turn makes this whole concept become a type of torture device. To sit there staring at scrambled letters trying to decipher a drawing that looks like a 3 year old kid made while touching the screen with sticky fingers isn’t fun, it isn’t fun at all. This whole “forever” concept reminds me of E.T. for the Atari 2600. (At least E.T. looked prettier than the drawings that are regurgitated from my fat fingers) Plus having a set of limited color choices and art skills that involve a touch screen will give any friend or foe the impression that you fail at being creative in life. At least with E.T. he was able to eventually find his way home (not in the actual game of course). With Draw Something, the only dying that will occur is either your patience or your relationship with your friend. This game would be more enjoyable if the user was given more. Maybe start out with five colors? Have a game mode that includes a time limit and rewards the player more coins. Of course when it comes to games on smartphones these days there is never such a thing as a reward. In fact, games such as Draw Something remind me of the craptacular movie games that were released on the NES (Back to the Future had deadly bees?). The only reason for games like these to exist is to keep the player entertained for a short period of time, which contributes to A.D.D. Games like Draw Something would be especially fun if there weren’t two versions, a free and a paid version to skip the ads that show up between rounds. How about a pay version that actually rewards the player?Maybe give them a fourth choice allowing them to make their own word. No one wants to draw some celebrity with their fat fingers on a touch screen with only four color choices. How about a free version that is actually fun to play. Either way, it looks like most social network games are heading into this direction. Especially games like Draw Something that depend on a player’s wallet for a source of income to reward them sooner instead of later. Kind of sad since this takes the fun out of games because in the end, it’s all about how much money the company can make from the user and their fingertips.

Chris Tourre and Lance Curran want to make your beer a little geekier. The idea is that each six-pack crafted by Arcade Brewery, operating out of New Chicago’s Beer Company , will feature a complete comic book story. It’s like they’ve taken the concept of Bazooka Joe and replaced it with a cold, refreshing beverage! With creators like artist Tony Moore (The Walking Dead) and writer Jason Aaron (Wolverine & The X-Men, Deadpool) already on board, this is sure to be something big. There’s currently a Kickstarter campaign to get the project going by January 2013 featuring incentives like original artwork from Moore and Jill Thompson (Scary Godmother, Daniel Bryan’s WWE ring attire), brewery tours, and the opportunity to star in your own six-pack adventure. Well, at least this time it’ll be a six-pack adventure you can be proud of.
